The Daily Teaser …

You know, that’s one thing with clocks in Britain switching from British Summer Time, back to Greenwich Mean Time; I was up at 7, today. It was 8 on Saturday.

Same time, different day!

And there’s possibly tons of variations of that phrase …

At any rate, yesterday was a quiet day, I’ve got to confess.

But I do know, having watched Kevin leave a comment yesterday, that I’ve had added a comment to the ‘How To’; I’ve had the odd complaint or two, and it struck me, watching him, that I’d seen a solution …

At any rate, we have a two-way, two person tie, yesterday, between Andrea and Tim.

Let’s see what people can do, today, shall we? Shall we?

Yes, let’s; here’s today’s questions, along with the ‘How To’* …

Q1) Today is the Feast day of which sainted English king?

Q2) Which kingdom was Saint Alfred the king of?

Q3) October 26th, 1881, saw which famous shootout take place in Arizona? (Andrea, as our resident American, I’m expecting you to do well!)

Q4) 26thOctober, 1965, saw which band named as MBE’s?

Q5) One year earlier, 26th October, 1964 saw the last person to be executed in which English speaking country?

Q6) 26th October, 1972, saw the death of Igor Sikorsky, the man who built the world’s first mass produced what?

Q7) 26th October, 1951, saw who become Prime Minister of Great Britain, after winning the General Election?

Q8) And finally, today in 2000, saw the publication of the heavily critical Phillips Report into government handling of which two diseases?

And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) October 25th, 1415, saw Henry 5th of England win which famous Battle against the French?

A1) The Battle of Agincourt. (This isn’t the day to mention I’m a Jean-Michel Jarre fan, is it?)

Q2) Today saw George 3rd become king of both Great Britain and Ireland; in which year did he become King of the United Kingdom?

A2) Believe it or not, 1801. (Which is the year the two kingdoms turned into the United Kingdom.)

Q3) More to the point, who played George 3rd in the film, “The Madness of King George”?

A3) The late Nigel Hawthorne. (Opposite Helen Mirrim, as Queen Charlotte)

Q4) 25th October, 1917, is the traditional date of Russia’s October Revolution; on what date did this happen, in the modern Gregorian calendar?

A4) November 7th, 1917. (Roughly a fortnight’s difference.)

Q5) Today in 1938, saw Archbishop Francis J. L. Beckman denounce what kind of music as a “primrose path to hell”; Swing, Jazz, Rap, Blues, or Heavy Metal?

A5) Swing. (Lord KNOWS what he would’ve made of Rap or Heavy Metal!)

Q6) October 25th, 1854, saw the most heroic — or disastrous — episode in British military history, at the Battle of Balaklava; which episode was it?

A6) The Charge of The Light Brigade.

Q7) October 25th, 1984, saw the birth of Katheryn Hudson; she’s better known as which US singer?

A7) Katy Perry. (Bless ’im, I know Doctor Paul had a Faux Lesbian quiz, up at Edinburgh’s Blind Poet, last night, off the back of this. Sounds like fun! Especially the mystery phrase idea … )

Q8) And finally; today in 2004, saw the death of which Radio One DJ?

A8) John Ravenscroft; better known, of course, as John Peel. (About the only time I’ve ever held a Minute’s silence, at one of the Pub quizzes.)

Enjoy those, folks. I’ll catch you later!
