Doomsday: Revisiting the Hot Zone …

1st March, 2011

You know, right now, I’m going to admit to happily yawning.

But thought that, if nothing else, I should at least get started on a post.

Complete with the intention of finishing in the morning.

It is a bit late to be up on a work night, after all.

But — as I said a couple of lines ago — I wanted to at least start telling you about the movie that I, Movie Night Adrian and Kevin D saw, tonight.

Me and Adrian were revisiting an old friend.

The 2008 Neil Marshall directed film, Doomsday.

And we took Kevin with us …

Now that last line certainly sound’s odd, now I come to look at it a day later … …

Hmmm …

Doesn’t it just … ?

At any rate …

Last night — as you’ve probably worked out — saw Kevin D, Movie Night Adrian and I happily sitting back with plenty of tea and a movie that Adrian and I had caught some time ago: the 2008, Neil Marshall directed, Doomsday.

One we seen — and that I’d written about — but that Kevin hadn’t seen before now.

Actually, I’ve got to admit, watching the post movie natter about the relative merits of Marshall’s The Descent versus Dog Soldiers was quite something: I forget who preferred what, but it got … well … not heated, but very intense …

AHEM … !

Let’s get moving on, shall we … ?

Now, just in case you’ve not read my previous post about Doomsday, I’ll try to summarise, quickly.

The film is set roughly 25 years or so into the future, after Britain has been devastated by something called the ‘Reaper Virus’.

And only managing to survive by turning Scotland into a modern-day leper-colony into which the plague’s victims are dumped.

And walled off.

Until further victims start dying in London.

At that stage … ?

Well …

That’s when a government slowly panicking — represented by Alexander Siddig as the very Blair like PM, John Hatcher and Michæl O’Hara as his very Scottish number and rival, David Canarisª — decide they have to send in the proverbial hard squad.

On what — potentially — is a suicide mission led by Mjr Eden Sinclair, played by Rhona Mitra*.

Now …

Where does all that leave me … ?

Oh, yeah …

Now, I think I can refer you back to my original post about Doomsday.

But add that I still am impressed by it: by way of contrast, I should add that Adrian and Kevin … were vaguely divided …

I’ll leave you seeing stars … !

Oh …

And a bit of a do

Doomsday
Paul: Keeper ★★★☆
Adrian: Keeper ★★★½☆
Kevin: Watcher ★★☆☆

* There’s a whole week of discussion, there: Adrian, bless ’im, does various forms of English martial art — things like archery and quarter-staffing — and spent a lot of time enjoying the film … but wincing when a fight was staged inaccurately. The main point of discussion … ? Was the difference between a contact sport like Catch-as-Catch-Can wrestling and a stage fight: where the fighters have to make as much entertaining clanging before the villain ‘dies’. Hmmm … Adrian, remind me, what exactly was Kevin saying about American All-In and drama queens … … ?

ª Which is a ANOTHER discussion, Adrian feeling he was more Peter Mandelson. I’d’ve said that was the Malcolm McDowell character, Kane, myself. And can’t WAIT to see what Neil Marshall makes of our current government …
