The Daily Teaser: 19-5-11

Wha … ?

I did … ?

… …

… … …

GAAAHHHH … !

I’ll be honest … I managed to leave an answer in, yesterday!

I’ve got to admit, I did wonder what Kaiju was talking about …

Now, granted, that’s not usually something I do.

But I think I must have been having a senior moment, yesterday … !

GAAAHHHH … !

Again … !

Lets get moving on, shall we? Before I start telling you about Joseph Bazalgette’s design for central London’s sewerage system … !

««•»»

Yes, lets …

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Kaiju and Debbi — the official Teaser Gang Big Beasts — putting in their answers: with Kaijuª bagging 4* out of 5, and Debbi bagging 5.

Lets see how they — and you — do with today’s answers, shall we … ? Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video

Q1) 19th May, 1971, saw the Soviet Union launch its second probe to where … ?

Q2) Nine years later, 19th May, 1980, saw which volcano explode … ?

Q3) More to the point, in which US State is that volcano … ?

Q4) 19th May, 2004, saw Tony Blair hit with purple dyed flour: thrown by protestors from which group … ?

Q5) May 19th, 1988, saw the birth of actress and model, Lily Cole: in which Terry Gilliam film did she make an appearance … ?

Q6) And finally … 19th May, 1935, saw the death of which British army officer … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 18th May, 1897, saw the original publication of Dracula: who was the author … ?
A1) Bram Stoker.

Q2) Just as a point, Dracula is, obviously, named after Vlad 3rd Tepes … of where … ?
Q2) Wallachia, in what’s now Romania.

Q3) More to the point, how many times did Vlad rule his nation: two, three or four times … ?
A3) Three times.

Q4) Equally to the point, which religious order did Vlad and his father belong too … ?
A4) The Order of the Dragon. Hence Vlad 2nd’s nickname, Dracul, or Dragon, and Vlad 3rd’s: Dracula, ‘Son of the Dragon’

Q5.) And finally … Vlad 3rd was an ally Hungarian king, Matthias Corvinus: in which vampiric film series do the Covinus family play a role … ?
A5) The Underworld series.
Enjoy those, everyone. I’ll catch you later …

After I’ve left you with a tune from birthday girl, Dame Nellie Melba …

* Turns out Sighișoara was where Vlad 2nd was exiled, Kaiju … although I can’t help but think of him as “Daddy Dearest”, for some strange reason …

ª Actually, another thing, Kaiju … I’ve GOT to confess, I’ve only ever read the first book in the series, although I do know Terry Pratchett° does pretty much the same thing. Ankh Morkpork‡, the main city on the Discworld, has areas called Hide Park and the Isle of Gods: and has references to 16th Venice and the 19th century flooding of Seattle. Oh, and sewers. And a condom factory. The annoying thing is that then someone tells you that the Discworld’s for kids.

° Actually, Debbi, did I mention Ms McRae’s Discworld (sort of) namesake, Sam Vimes … ? Pure speculation, but I think I love to see the meeting between Baltimore’s most determined lawyer and the Disc’s stroppiest copper …

Equally as strangely, theres a part of my friends, Gwen and Stefan, home town, called The Shades … Ahem … !

1.Mars
After years of failed attempts, the Soviet Union's luck seemed to change when two spacecraft reached Mars in 1971. The first, called Mars 2 , was launched on May 19, while Mars 3 followed a few days later. These probes were unlike any that had been launched before, because each was composed of two parts: an orbiter that would orbit Mars and a lander that would be released by the orbiter onto the planet's surface. Once each lander was on the ground, panels would open up to reveal a small roving vehicle designed to scoot along the planet's surface by using skis attached to its sides. Both "rovers" were fitted with scientific instruments for measuring the chemical properties of the soil and the composition of the atmosphere. They were also equipped with mechanical scoops to search for organic signs of life and cameras to photograph the Martian surface. lthough neither of the Soviet rovers accomplished its intended mission, Mars 2 (in spite of its crash landing) earned the distinction of being the first human-made object to ever reach the Martian surface. The orbiters fared a little better, both completing their journeys around Mars

2.Mount St Helens exploded but the date seems to be 18th May
3.Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington
