The Daily Teaser — 7-2-2013: Europe

Hmmm …

Now, that strikes me as a bad start to the day … !

I have to admit, I was up on time.   Got myself a cuppa done.  And immediately noticed the version of Safari I’m using — Safari 5.1.7, so you know — was on a Go-Slow.   Or possibly work to rule.

I hate that when that happens!   Especially when I was going to tell you about Metropolis … !

Never mind: let’s get a shift on, shall we … ?

Yesterday’s teaser saw Debbi putting in her answers.   Along with highlighting the good work Al Yankovic has done*, she also managed to bag 5 out of 6.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?   Here they are, along with the  ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 7th February, 1992, saw the signing of the Maastricht Treaty on the EU: in which country is Maastricht … ?
Q2) It — originally — was signed by members of what was then called what: the EEC, the EC or the EU … ?
Q3) That organisation is now the EU: what does EU stand for … ?
Q4) More to the point, how many members does the EU have … ?
Q5) What’s the name of the single currency used in many EU countries … ?
Q6) How many members of the EU use that single currency … ?
Q7) Name one of them …
Q8) While we’re being monetary: in which German city is the European Central Bank … ?
Q9) How many official languages are there, in the EU … ?
Q10) And finally … the European Parliament is elected for terms of how long: 5, 7 or 15 years … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 6th February, 1819, saw Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles found the city of Singapore: name either of the colours on the Singaporean flag.
A1) Red and white.
Q2) More to the point, name any of Singapore’s four official languages … ?
A2) English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil.
Q3) Moving on, 6th February, 1900, saw the founding of an international arbitration court: in which European city … ?
A3) The Hague.
Q4) 6th February, 1914, saw pro-monarchical demonstration in which European country: Norway, Denmark or Sweden … ?
A4) Sweden.
Q5) 6th February, 2001, saw Ariel Sharon elected as Prime Minister of Israel: which Israeli party did he head … ?
A5) Likud.
Q6) Finally … 6th February, 1649, saw Charles 2nd named as king of England and Scotland: by the Parliament of where … ?
A6) Scotland.
I’ll leave you with this thought from an anonymous thought from a writer from the Financial Times
“The European parliament has suddenly come into its own. It marks another shift in power between the three central EU institutions. Last week's vote suggests that the directly elected MEPs, in spite of their multitude of ideological, national and historical allegiances, have started to coalesce as a serious and effective EU institution, just as enlargement has greatly complicated negotiations inside both the Council and Commission.”
And with the European Anthem:L as performed by a well known lab assistant …

Oh, and something appropriate from a well know Düsseldorf band …

Enjoy the day …

*        Oh, I’ll try and have a read of that, later, Debbi: but you notice Eric has a sensible computer … ?
