The Daily Teaser — 15-2-2014

Hmmm …

Well …

THAT’s seems to have calmed down …

I don’t know if you knew it, but I’ m in the UK: and, whilst my home town of Brentwood hasn’t had it as bad as SOME parts of the UK, we have been hit by last night’s storm.

There’s definitely a few trees down, around the area.

Not nice.

And yet, right at the moment … ?

Right at the moment, it doesn’t look too bad.

Here’s hoping things calm down, though: I don’t know quite how much more bad weather TV coverage I can deal with … !

Moving on, yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: along with letting us know she’s grabbing a coffee, also bagging nine† out of ten.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 15th February, 1971, saw Britain decimalize its currency.   In pre-decimal currency, 2 shillings and sixpence was also known as half a … what … ?
Q2) 15th February, 1946, saw the world’s first general purpose computer dedicated: in Philadelphia.   What was it called?

Q4) 15th February, 1989, saw the Red Army pull out of Afghanistan: following whose decision to reduce the army’s size?
Q5) Finally … 15th February, 2013, saw a meteor explode over Chelyabinsk.   In which country is Chelyabinsk?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) Which girl band had a 1964 hit with Chapel Of Love: The Supremes, The Dixie Cups or The Ronettes
Q2) According to the 1967, Aretha Franklin love song, ‘You Make Me Feel Like A … ’ what … ?
A2) Natural Woman.   (Obviously, that’s not NECESSARILY something that applies to me … )
Q3) Minnie Riperton had a 1975 hit with which song … ?
Q4) “Lying in my bed, I hear the clock tick, and think of you.”   Which love song by Cyndi Lauper opens with those lines … ?

Q6) The video for which Shakespeare’s Sister ballad sees the band members pillow fight over a comatose man … ?
A6) Stay.   (Although, SOMETIMES you have to listen to the French and Saunders version … just as an alternative …)
Q7) Which Beach Boys’ song is used at the end of Love, Actually, and as the opening theme for the series, Big Love … ?
Q8) Which Kate Bush song sees a wife testing her husband’s loyalty: whilst disguised as either a younger woman, OR a Russian granny?
A8) Babooshka.   (In Russian, though, the stress is on the first, rather than the second, syllable)
Q9) Which Elvis song was based on 1861 Civil War era song, Aura Lee … ?
Q10) “Oh yeah life goes on. Long after the thrill of livin' is gone.”   which John Cougar Mellencamp song are those lines from?
I’ll leave you with this tune by Melissa Manchester …

And this thought from Josh Marshall …
“Authoritarianism and secrecy breed incompetence; the two feed on each other. It’s a vicious cycle. Governments with authoritarian tendencies point to what is in fact their own incompetence as the rationale for giving them yet more power.”
Josh Marshall, born 15th Feb, 1969.
Have a good day.

*        Oh, that reminds me, Debbi: I’ll have to get some cocoa … !   Late night Earl Grays do keep you up of an evening … !
