Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-4-2018: Colditz.

16th April, 2018.

Yes: that’s right.

1.   I’m back at work, today.

And, frankly?   I’m still a temp that’s waiting to hear about the possibility of a full time — or, at least, permanent — contract.

You would NOT believe the amount of hoops I’ve had, to get this far.

Or maybe you would.

At any rate?

It’s coming at a point where hours are being cut — at the start of work’s general summer season — which is putting a twist on things.

The amount of hours I’m getting is going down: to the point where handing in my notice And going back on the dole is looking far more economic.

The sooner guaranteed hours turn up, the better.

2.   The other thing I meant to mention … ?

Is simply the fact I saw the South Korean horror film, The Wailing, last night.

It’s quite long: at some two and a half hours.

But it’s certainly worth a watch: there’s enough twists, turns and twitches to keep you entertained.

It pertained kept me interested.

3.   And, as a final thought … ?

R. Lee Ermey, best remembered as Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, has died at the age of 74.

I might just have to check the film out.

Never having seen it, it seems a good way to mark the man’s passing.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) High security Prisoner of war camp, Oflag IV-C — better known as Colditz — was liberated: on 16th April of which year?
Q2) The camp was liberated by who’s army: the UK’s, the USSR’s or the USA’s?
Q3) The camp was in Colditz … what: Castle, Chateau or Manor?
Q4) Colditz is in which German state: Saxony, Bavaria or Thuringia?
Q5) The first prisoners to arrive were a group of Poles.   They arrived in which year?
Q6) The Camp held awkward prisoners: ones with a history of escape attempts.   Who was the first British officer to escape from Colditz?
Q7) Sir David Stirling was a prisoner in Colditz.   He’d gained fame as the founder of which regiment?
Q8) Yves Conger was a French prisoner at Colditz: as well as an army Chaplain.   In which year was he eventually made a Roman Catholic Cardinal?
Q9) Which legless British fighter ace was a Colditz inmate?
Q10) Finally … ?   Pat Reid, the Colditz prisoner who literally wrote the book about the prison, claimed there were how many successful escape attempts: 30, 31 or 32?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) Serse had its premiere performance: on 15th April, 1738.   Who composed Serse?
Q2) The McDonald’s chain dates its opening: to 15th April, 1955.   When it’s first franchised branch was opened, where: Illinois, Indiana or Iowa?
A2) Illinois.
Q3) Pol Pot died: on 15th April, 1998.   He’d been the dictator of which country?
A3) Cambodia.
Q4) The US launched Operation El Dorado Canyon: on 15th April, 1986.   It was a US bombing of targets in which North African country?
A4) Libya.
Q5) Finally … 15th April, 1890, saw the birth of inventor, Percy Shaw.   Famously, Shaw invented which road safety device?
A5) The cat’s-eye.   (According to legend, he came up with the idea, driving home from the pub one night.)
Here’s a fact …
“Would-be escapees were punished with solitary confinement, instead of being summarily executed. In principle, the security officers recognized that it was the duty of the POWs to try to escape and that their own job was to stop them.”
From the Wikipedia entry on Oflag IV-C.
And the theme from the ‘72 TV series …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        First thing I checked, this morning, Olga.   Yep: the things on the right setting, the one for both heating and hot water.   Same as it’s been for the last decade.   What CAN I tell you … ?   (I don’t know if my landlord’s would spend money on a posher shower, though … Oh, and yes: The Founder’s been on my list for a while.)

†        I HAVE to admit, Debbi, I still don’t have that much Zappa in my collection: I’ve got FAR more Art of Noise!   Oh, did you hear about R. Lee Ermey?   I think I’m going to have to sit down with Full Metal Jacket.   I only know the tune

Some of the electric showers are not pricy at all, but I guess the installation might be a different matter. I'm intrigued by your move recommendation although I don't seem to have a lot of patience for long movies these days. Good luck with the job and I hope they get their act together and offer you something more permanent soon.
