Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-6-2016: Nova Albion

Good lord …

What the hell happened, there?

I don’t know if you’ve been following the UK news, but yesterday saw the death of Jo Cox: MP for Batley and Spen.

She was shot.

And stabbed.

By someone who’d apparently yelled ‘Put Britain first,’ as he was putting a bullet through her.

Personally … ?

My thoughts are with her family at this time.

~≈Â≈~

Equally personally … ?

I have to ask, what on EARTH happened, there?

Right at the moment?

Right at the moment, I wondering … well, several things.

But mainly, what motivated her killer.

I note from her obituary, Mrs Cox‡ was part of the Remain campaign: supported staying in the EU.

I also note that the killer, apparently, used that ‘Put Britain first’ phrase.

And can’t help but ask if that was the motivation.

It seems likely to me: but we won’t necessarily know, until police release more details.

~≈Â≈~

I’m also thinking something else.

For starters?   These past few weeks, I’ve become more inclined to vote leave: feeling that the issue of sovereignty — the amount of control Britain hands to the EU — is the main one for me.

I don’t like the idea that a lot of UK law is made in Brussels.

But?   I’m ALSO aware that someone getting shot, because they’re supporting Remain?

Got me thinking I should vote Remain.

I CANNOT support Leave, knowing someone has killed in support of that side of the argument.

~≈Â≈~

I’m ALSO wondering what the Leave and Remain campaigns will make something of this.

Would be wondering how to exploit Mrs Cox’s death.

Yes, I know that would be bad taste.

But is it as bad as pulling a trigger on a mother of two?

~≈Â≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) Nova Albion for England: on 17th June, 1579.   Nova, in this case, means what: old, new, borrowed or blue?
Q2) Who was England’s monarch, at the time?
Q3) Who led the fleet that landed in, and claimed, Nova Albion: Robert Dudley, Francis Drake or Hugh Willoughby?
Q4) The ‘Albion’ bit of the name refers to where: Scotland, England or Wales?
Q5) Finally … Nova Albion is commonly held to be where: California, Oregon or Washington?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 16th June, 1884, saw the opening of the world’s first roller-coaster: on which Brooklyn island?
A1) Coney Island.
Q2) 16th June, 1903, saw the incorporation of the Ford Motor Company.   Which mass produced car — first released in 1908 — was its first successful model?
A2) Tin Lizzy, itself: the Model T.
Q3) 16th June, 1971, saw the birth of rapper, Tupac Shakur.   He was shot dead in September of which year?
A3) 1996.
Q4) 16th June saw the start of the Monterey Pop Festival: one of the most famous events of the 1960s.   On 16th June of which year?
A4) 1967.
Q5) Finally … 16th June, 1829, saw the birth of Geronimo.   Which Native American tribe was he a member of: Apache, Cherokee or Yurok?
A5) Apache.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“It seemeth that the Spaniards hitherto had never been in this part of the country, neither did ever discover the land by many degrees to the southwards of this place.”From Richard Hakluyt’s Account of the discovery of Nova Albion.
And — just because it uses the term — this tune …

Have a good day.

*        Blimey!   Did you hear about Jo Cox, Olga?   Shocking piece of news … !

†        Oh, TISH, Debbi!   You do it, yourself … ! :D

‡        I also note Mrs Cox did much work for refugees: and again, wonder about motivations.

Q1) New (I think there’s something missing on the question but not sure how you intended to phrase it… )
Q2) Queen Elizabeth I
Q3) Francis Drake
Q4) England
Q5) California
Yes, I heard it in the news. Terrible news. Here in Spain they were talking about David Cameron visiting Gibraltar and it seems he heard the news when he was in the air already, so he landed but didn't do any of the public events programmed. A sorry state of affairs. Indeed it's difficult to know what would motivate somebody to do something like that. And in such a brutal fashion. Stabbing and shooting a woman... And this is England where it is not quite that easy to get hold of firearms. I read there is a political organisation of sorts named 'Put Britain First' but they denied they had anything to do with that...

Rick told me about Mrs. Cox. Very tragic! :(

All this craziness with guns. Enough!

1. new
2. Elizabeth I
3. Francis Drake
4. England (as in the White Cliffs of Dover)
5. California (Imagine confusing England with that state! Well, the White Cliffs are somewhat reminiscent of the rugged Northern California coast. You should see it someday.)
